Overview
Darjeeling is a charming hill station located in the northern part of West Bengal, India, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas at an altitude of about 2,000 meters. Popularly known as the “Queen of the Hills,” Darjeeling is celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty, cool and refreshing climate, and sprawling tea plantations that produce the world-famous Darjeeling tea, often referred to as the “champagne of teas.” One of the major attractions of the town is the spectacular view of Kanchenjunga, the third-highest mountain in the world, which can be best seen during sunrise from Tiger Hill, when the snow-covered peaks glow in golden hues.
Darjeeling also holds historical and cultural significance due to its colonial past under British rule, which is reflected in its architecture, schools, and churches. A major highlight is the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers a scenic journey through hills, forests, and quaint villages. The town is culturally diverse, with influences from Nepali, Tibetan, and Bengali communities, which can be seen in its festivals, food, and lifestyle. Monasteries, bustling local markets, and viewpoints add to its charm, making Darjeeling not only a place of natural beauty but also a vibrant cultural destination that attracts tourists from all over the world.
