Overview
Ashtapad is a highly revered spiritual site in Jainism, believed to be located near the sacred Mount Kailash in the Himalayas. According to Jain tradition, Ashtapad is the place where the first Tirthankara, Rishabhanatha (also known as Adinath), attained moksha (liberation from the cycle of birth and death). The name “Ashtapad” means “eight steps” or “eight terraces,” referring to the mythical steps leading up the mountain.
It is considered one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations for Jains, symbolizing ultimate spiritual achievement and liberation. Although the exact physical location is difficult to access and remains largely symbolic for many devotees, Ashtapad holds immense religious importance and is often represented in Jain temples through models and artistic depictions. The site embodies ideals of renunciation, meditation, and spiritual purity, making it a central concept in Jain beliefs and traditions.
